Employment Services

At Summer Street, we see every day how meaningful employment creates confidence, connection, and belonging. Through our Employment Services Program, we support participants in finding rewarding job opportunities.

To get started, interested employers meet with our job developers to discuss opportunities and good matches. Prior to placement, program participants receive training in job skills, work related interpersonal skills, habits and attitudes for success in any work setting.

Participants in the program have a wide range of skills including: production, customer support, food services, janitorial, inventory stocking and landscaping. Hiring is made easy with clearly established expectations and work terms. Ongoing support is provided as required. Employment can be full-time, part-time or through subcontracting. The Employment Services Program currently includes over 50 employers.

Employment Services Feature | Shey MacDonald at Cineplex, New Glasgow

When Shey MacDonald started with Cineplex in February 2023 as a Cast Member/Usher, she brought more than just a strong work ethic, she brought joy, connection, and a deep appreciation for her work.

From popping popcorn to greeting guests with a smile, Shey is at the heart of the theatre experience. Her role includes cleaning the lobby, checking tickets, maintaining the auditoriums and bathrooms, and taking care of garbage and recycling. But for Shey, it’s the people that make it special, “I like my amazing boss and socializing with customers and friends,”

Shey’s team plays a big role in her success. “I have a good supportive team that is able to work together when things get busy,” she shares. With their support, she’s learned the value of punctuality, teamwork, and being approachable. “Being approachable is a huge part of my job,” she adds.

Working at Cineplex has made a meaningful impact on Shey's life. With shift lengths that accommodate her needs, she feels respected and empowered. “I’m proud of my work,” she says, “and I’m following in my mom’s footsteps who was a former employee at Cineplex!”

Her manager Todd has witnessed Shey’s growth firsthand. “Shey has grown by staying on top of her duties and being more organized,” he shares. But beyond her performance, it’s Shey’s spirit that leaves a lasting impression. “Shey’s outgoing attitude and friendly demeanor is a reminder of the most important things in customer service.”

Having Shey on the team has made a difference, not just in the work, but in the workplace culture. “Shey has taught us that everybody has strengths and weaknesses,” Todd reflects. “Good managers adjust as needed and allow people to shine where they are most effective.”

To other businesses considering inclusive hiring, Shey offers the following advice, “Be understanding and patient. Be open to seeing what people with diverse abilities can offer your company.” Todd agrees, “have patience and learn to develop your staff.”

Summer Street Employment Services connects participants with training, coaching, and community-based work experiences across Pictou County. Our job developers build relationships with local employers, support onboarding, and provide follow-up so placements are sustainable and rewarding for everyone involved.
